MALËUS : Lorenzo’s Creative Frontier

At 25, Lorenzo Mazières-Andjoua is a multifaceted designer whose work spans fashion, graphic design, and 3D artistry, all deeply rooted in his love for architecture and technology. Born in Gabon and now based in Canada (Montréal), Lorenzo’s journey into fashion began with the serendipitous discovery of an old sewing machine in his attic. This moment ignited a passion that would eventually lead to the creation of his brand, MALËUS.

"It feels like I'm building bridges between my dreams and the tangible world every day."

What inspired you to venture into the fashion industry? Why « MALËUS »?

MALËUS's story began with a magical moment : finding an old sewing machine in the attic, a relic hidden among memories in my house in Gabon. That moment was a revelation, a calling. Altering my clothes was like giving them a new life, a story that mirrored my own. When I arrived in Canada, sharing a piece of myself became a natural step. Before MALËUS, there was "Lunatic Sensible," a preliminary sketch of my vision. But MALËUS is the masterpiece, a balance between light and shadow, the accessibility of fashion that speaks to the soul.

How would you describe the overall style and aesthetic of your brand?

Well-being, discovery, transformation. Each piece is an invitation to explore, rediscover, and evolve. Wearing MALËUS is meant to be an experience, a journey both inward and outward.

We love the creativity behind your logo. How did you come up with that idea?

Ah, the logo... My team could tell you how indecisive I was. After nights spent drawing and redrawing, simplicity became my choice. The "m" represents more than a letter; it's a path, a constellation of possibilities, an ode to the simplicity that veils our inner complexity, much like us.

What inspired the last capsule and design aesthetic?

The concept behind this shirt is to promote freedom and individuality. Each zipper transforms the shape and silhouette of the shirt, influencing its interaction with the wind and the body. Each adjustment creates a new path, unique to each wearer. This shirt embodies the idea that everyone can choose their own path and express their singularity through their clothing style.

Can you walk us through the process of designing and creating a garment from concept to finished product?

My journey didn't follow the conventional paths of fashion; as a self-taught designer, each creation is an adventure, a challenge. From the first pencil stroke to the final stitch, it's a path filled with learning, setbacks, and victories. Each piece goes through my hands and bears witness to this quest, crafted with heart in our Montreal workshop.

Could you share any collaborations or partnerships that have influenced your recent collections?

MALËUS hasn't embarked on any collaborations, so I can’t draw from that well of inspiration just yet. However, I find that life itself—the journey we carve out, the paths we choose to follow—fuels my creativity.

How do you stay ahead of fashion trends while maintaining your brand's unique identity?

My compass? It's not the trend, but my soul. To create is to share a piece of myself, not merely to meet a demand. Staying true to who I am, that's my creed.

What challenges have you faced in the fashion industry, and how have you overcome them?

“Learning to navigate this complex world with patience and perseverance has been my Everest. Every day is a lesson, each failure a step closer to understanding.”

“Adapting means connecting, and it's the soul of our latest creation. More than just a pair of pants, it's a fusion of style and function. It embraces the vibrant energy of the city, the wild freedom of nature, and the professional world. Each color refers to a different universe, a new perspective.
It's not just a garment, it's a symbol of adaptability and connection.”

Can you share any upcoming projects or collaborations?

I'm on the way of realizing a dream: my first collection. It's a long journey, but seeing the outline of this dream take shape is an indescribable emotion.

How do you envision the future of your brand, and what goals do you hope to achieve?

I dream of a MALËUS that transcends fashion, touches people, and helps build something greater. More than a brand, a positive imprint, constructive change in the lives of our community.

What is your definition of the Underground?

“The Underground for me? It's like the secret basement of innovation. It's where raw ideas get their hands dirty and where the real magic happens, far from the bright lights of the mainstream. It's about being bold, trying new things, and not caring if they'll be the next big thing. For MALEUS, it's our creative playground, where we can dream up the future of fashion without rules holding us back.”
